Pediatric dentistry is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on the oral health of infants, children, and adolescents — including those with special healthcare needs. It covers both preventive and comprehensive dental care to ensure healthy smiles from the very start.
Request an AppointmentWhen Should Parents Start Cleaning Their Baby’s Teeth?
The earlier, the better! According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (aapd.org), parents should begin cleaning their child’s gums at birth using a soft infant toothbrush or a clean, damp cloth. This gentle routine helps remove bacteria and prepares your baby for future brushing habits.
Unless recommended by your child’s pediatric dentist, fluoridated toothpaste should be avoided until age 2 to 3.
When Should Children Have Their First Dental Visit?
Children should see a dentist by the time they get their first tooth or by their first birthday — whichever comes first. Early visits help prevent dental problems before they start and promote healthy habits for life.
One of the most common concerns in young children is early childhood caries (also called baby bottle tooth decay or nursing caries), which can develop quickly without proper care.
Preventing Tooth Decay from Bottles or Nursing
To protect your child’s teeth:
- Begin introducing a cup around their first birthday.
- Avoid letting your child fall asleep with a bottle.
- Limit nighttime breastfeeding after the first baby teeth appear.
- Never serve juice or sugary drinks in a bottle — and limit these beverages overall. When offered, they should be served in a cup.
These small changes can make a big difference in your child’s dental health.
General Anesthesia Services
For children who require more extensive treatment or have special needs, Dr. Baloul, a pediatric dentist affiliated with the Franciscan Hospital for Children, offers care under general anesthesia. Our facility is fully approved for deep sedation, administered by a certified anesthesiologist who remains present throughout the procedure and until your child is fully awake and comfortable.
